Manufacturing guide

ODM vs OEM jewellery manufacturing: which is right for your store?

Two ways to get your own jewellery line made, explained for retail jewellers.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) means you choose from a manufacturer's existing designs and sell them under your own brand. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) means the manufacturer builds your own design to your specification. ODM is the quickest, simplest way to launch a branded line. OEM gives you designs that belong to you alone. Osia International, a Hong Kong ODM fine jewellery manufacturer since 1992, offers both, plus private label developed to your brief, with no minimum order.

What is ODM jewellery?

ODM jewellery is made from designs the manufacturer has already developed. At Osia, you choose pieces from our catalogue, adapt the metal, size or stones, and we stamp them with your brand. There is no design work to commission, so you can add a branded range quickly. The trade-off is exclusivity: Osia's catalogue designs are non-exclusive and available to any trade account.

What is OEM jewellery?

OEM jewellery is made to your own design. You send a CAD file or sketch, and the manufacturer builds it to full production quality. At Osia, your designs remain your property, and for designs made to your brief we release the CAD and JCD files to you. OEM suits retailers who already have designs, or a signature look they want to own outright.

Where does private label fit?

Private label sits between the two. You bring the brief, and the manufacturer's design team does the design work. At Osia, our design team develops a range around your brief, references or target price point. You approve it on 3D CAD, and the finished designs are your property. It suits retailers who want an exclusive line but don't have an in-house designer.

Repeat orders of an existing private-label design take 3–4 weeks for a simple piece, and 4–5 weeks for a complicated piece (more diamond setting or stone-sourcing complexity).

When does ODM suit a retail jeweller?

Choose ODM when speed and simplicity matter more than exclusivity. It is a good way to:

  • test a new category, such as lab-grown diamond studs or men's rings, before committing to your own designs
  • fill gaps in a bridal or fine jewellery range with proven styles
  • put your brand on the pieces without commissioning design work

Because there is no minimum order at Osia, you can start small and reorder what sells.

When does OEM suit a retail jeweller?

Choose OEM or private label when the design itself is part of your brand. It suits you if you:

  • already have designs, CAD files or a signature collection
  • want pieces customers can't find at another store
  • plan to reorder the same designs over time and want to keep the files

At Osia, OEM and private-label designs are your property, and your specifications, styles, stone grades and stamping are kept confidential under signed NDA.

How Osia makes both

Whichever route you choose, the production is the same. Osia designs, specifies and manages every order end to end, with close, long-term partner workshops and factories. Casting is done in our partner production factories, and stone setting is done either locally in Hong Kong or at our partner workshops and factories, depending on the job. Every piece is checked at factory level and again by Osia's in-house quality control, including diamond testing, before dispatch.

  • No minimum order, including custom and private-label work.
  • Approval on 3D CAD, with no physical sample stage. Production starts once you approve the CAD and pay a 50% deposit, and the balance is due before shipment.
  • Your brand on every piece: logo and brand stamping are part of every private-label specification. Branded packaging can be arranged on request and is quoted with your order.
  • Metals: 9K–22K gold, 925 sterling to 960 Argentium silver, and Pt900–Pt950 platinum.
  • Stones: GIA, IGI or HRD certified diamonds, natural and lab-grown, with natural stones sourced consistent with the Kimberley Process. You can also supply your own stones.
  • Registered dealer: registered with the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department as a Dealer in Precious Metals and Stones, registration A-B-24-01-04540 (Category A).
  • One point of contact, with offices in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Sydney.

ODM vs OEM: common questions

Is ODM or OEM better for a new jewellery brand?

For most new brands and retailers, ODM is the easier start: you launch with proven designs under your own brand, without paying for design work. Move to OEM or private label when you want designs nobody else can sell. At Osia there is no minimum order on either route, so you can start with ODM and add exclusive designs later.

Who owns the design with ODM and with OEM?

With ODM, the manufacturer owns the design, and at Osia catalogue designs are non-exclusive. With OEM, and with private label made to your brief, the design is yours: Osia releases the CAD and JCD files to you and keeps your specifications confidential under signed NDA.

Is there a minimum order for ODM or OEM jewellery at Osia?

No. There is no minimum order, including custom and private-label work.

Do you make physical samples before production?

No. You approve the design on 3D CAD renders, and production starts once you approve the CAD and pay the deposit.

How long does OEM or private-label jewellery take to make?

New designs from CAD typically take 25–45 business days from deposit. Repeat orders of an existing private-label design take 3–4 weeks for a simple piece and 4–5 weeks for a complicated one.

Can I put my own brand on ODM pieces?

Yes. Brand stamping is part of every private-label specification, including on catalogue (ODM) designs. Branded packaging can be arranged on request and is quoted with your order.
